Galena on pyrite crystals (MiESP067)
$99.00 – $100.49
A beautiful miniature-sized cluster of galena on pyrite crystals (MiESP067) from Huanzala Mine, Peru
This specimen is a natural break-off from the wall. The piece does not show damage from the mining process. The extremely shiny surface of the break area proves the beginning of a natural re-crystallization process of the pyrite.
Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead(II) sulfide (PbS). It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver.
The mineral pyrite or iron pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2 (iron (II) disulfide).
Miniature size: 50 x 42 x 19 mm.
Weight: 75 gr
Origin: Huanzala Mine, Peru

Pyrite enjoyed brief popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms, most notably the wheellock, where a sample of pyrite was placed against a circular file to strike the sparks needed to fire the gun.
Huanzala is a lead-zinc mine with a 1,200 tons/day capacity, operated by Cia. Minera Santa Luisa and owned by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. (Japan). The mine is famous all around the world for excellent pyrite and fluorite specimens. According to well-known mineral specimen importer Rock Currier, the Huanzala mine probably holds the world record with regard to total tonnage of mineral specimens produced by a single mine. According to Mardani Fine Minerals “Huanzala has been praised as one of the greatest pyrite localities of all time.”
